Watercolour painting is a New Zealand iconographic tradition. I have taken this tradition and more specifically its central motif, the flower, replete with its decorative and naturalistic associations and repositioned it within an imaginary realm infused with mystery.

These works on paper combine a string of related and unrelated forms: worms, fingers, flowers, islands, sea and sky that providing the backdrop for a pictorial stream of conscious narrative, like unraveling a fantasy story. These paintings are mysterious landscapes in which the phantom flowers transform the familiar into something fantastical and theoretical .
